Dimesum vs Splitwise: features, price and how to move a group
Dimesum keeps a free ledger with no daily cap and a balance per currency; Splitwise has a free tier that its help centre caps at 4 expenses a day, as of 7 October 2026. The feature table, where Dimesum is behind, the prices, and how to move a group in one evening.
Dimesum vs Splitwise comes down to the daily cap and the currencies. Dimesum's ledger is free with no daily expense limit and keeps every currency's balance apart. Splitwise has a free tier that stops at 4 expenses a day, as its help centre states as of 7 October 2026, with unlimited expenses and currency conversion in Pro.
The trade runs the other way on reach. Splitwise runs on the web, iOS and Android today; Dimesum's web app is live and its phone apps are in closed testing. We make Dimesum, so read this with that in mind: every Splitwise fact below is dated and sourced, and where our sources say nothing, we say so.

|---|---|---|
| Price of the ledger | Free | Free tier, plus Pro at $2.99 to $39.99 in the US |

The daily cap is the sharpest difference
Dimesum has no per-day bill limit on its free ledger. Splitwise documents its cap: the help centre article What is Splitwise Pro and who can use it? says a free account can add up to 4 expenses each day, as of 7 October 2026. Reviewers have described meeting it since at least 6 September 2024, when a Hacker News comment said free accounts had been throttled to four a day.
The reviews on the Splitwise App Store listing make the same point. Of the 150 most recent across six storefronts, 69 gave one or two stars as of 22 August 2026. The expense limit came up in 19 of those and the paywall in 38. Our page on the Splitwise daily expense limit answers the questions people ask when they meet it.
A cap like that bites on trips, because a trip adds bills in bursts; the best apps to split travel expenses covers that case. Twelve bills on the first night and none for two days is a normal weekend away. A flat adding rent and one shop a week may never notice.
A yen dinner stays in yen
Dimesum keeps a separate balance for every currency a group uses, and lets the group read them folded at rates it agrees. Splitwise supports 100+ currencies, and puts currency conversion in Pro. The difference shows on the first trip that crosses a border.
Take Aiko, Lucas and Mei in Tokyo. Aiko pays ¥12,000 for dinner, split three ways. Lucas pays €90 for the first hotel night, split three ways. Each person's share of the dinner is ¥4,000, and of the hotel €30.
| Person | Yen balance | Euro balance | Read in euros at €1 = ¥160 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aiko | +¥8,000 | −€30 | +€20 |
| Lucas | −¥4,000 | +€60 | +€35 |
| Mei | −¥4,000 | −€30 | −€55 |
Each column sums to zero. Aiko is owed ¥8,000 and owes €30. If the group agrees on €1 = ¥160, Dimesum can show the trip as one figure each, and Mei reads that she is down €55.
The yen and euro balances underneath stay exact, so a rate nobody agreed never becomes a debt. Settling runs per currency, in at most two transfers each for three people, as our guide to settling up group expenses shows. We explain why the rate stays out of the record in six multi-currency money bugs, and compare other apps in multi-currency expense splitting apps.
An edit keeps the history in Dimesum
In Dimesum, an edit restates the whole split and keeps the earlier version. Nothing is overwritten. If Lucas fixes the hotel from €90 to €96, the group can see the old figure, the new one and when it changed, and each share moves from €30 to €32.
Our sources record nothing about how Splitwise stores an edit, so we make no claim about it. What we can say is why the rule matters: a typo fix that quietly changes who is in the split is how a balance drifts with nobody able to say why. The reasoning is in why an edit must restate its split, and the structure under it in the append-only ledger.
Friends who will not install anything
In Dimesum, someone without the app takes a seat from a link or a QR code, and you can add a person who has no account as a kept place they claim later, balance and all. In Splitwise, as of August 2026, the web app can add unnamed members and the mobile app cannot.
Splitwise's own feedback forum shows the demand. "Add friends without email or phone" sat seventh by votes on 22 August 2026, with 625, marked under review. We cover the case in splitting a bill with someone without the app.
Paying each other: doors or a wallet
Dimesum never holds money. When it is time to pay, it opens a door to the way the other person likes to be paid: PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, Wise, Revolut, Zelle, PayNow, Pix or a bank transfer by IBAN. A payment that spans several groups is one record the payee confirms once.
Splitwise is building payments of its own. Splitwise Pay is a US-only wallet banked by Coastal Community Bank, where a standard transfer is $0.00 and an instant withdrawal costs 1.75%, with a minimum of $0.25 and a maximum of $25. Its pay-by-bank option through Tink reached the UK on 22 April 2024 and France, Germany and Austria on 20 October 2025. The App Store listing also shows Venmo and PayPal for the US.
The most-voted request on Splitwise's forum, with 985 votes, is paying for individual items, and Splitwise has said it is not planning it. How settling works in each app is in our guide to what settle up means in Splitwise.
Splitting a bill by item
Dimesum splits a bill by item, with tax, tip and discounts shared by what each person had, on the free ledger. You type the lines; reading a receipt photo is not live in Dimesum yet. In Splitwise, receipt scanning and itemisation are both Pro features as of August 2026.
So for a dinner where Sofia had the €18 fish and Noah the €12 pasta, each pays for their own plate, and the tax follows the plates. Our guide to splitting a restaurant bill fairly works the numbers, and apps that split a bill by item compares the options.
Where Dimesum is behind
Dimesum is new. Its web app is live at app.dimesum.com, its Android and iOS apps are in closed testing, and it has no store listing. Receipt reading is not live. Splitwise has run since February 2011, on web, iOS and Android, with recurring bills and several payers on one bill.
That age is also history. A group with years of bills in Splitwise has a record it may want to keep, and moving it takes an evening, covered below. Splitwise remains independent: it raised a $20M Series A from Insight Partners in April 2021, and no round since, as of August 2026.
Stay with Splitwise if one of these is true
Each of these is a fact about your group, not a judgement of either app. If one holds, switching costs more than it saves.
- Everyone in your group already pays for Pro. The cap and the ads are gone for all of you.
- You need a phone app in a store today. Dimesum's phone apps are in closed testing.
- You are in the United States and pay mostly with the Splitwise Card. Splitwise's card page says card expenses are unlimited without Pro.
- Nobody in the group will export the history. Without a member's export, the history stays where it is.
How to move a group from Splitwise to Dimesum
The move is yours to make, from your own export. The Splitwise API terms forbid using its API for an app that competes with Splitwise, so Dimesum does not pull your data. A member exports it, and an AI assistant adds it.
- A member of the group exports it from Splitwise as a spreadsheet.
- Open the Dimesum web app, sign in with your email, and create a read and write key on the Developer screen under Me.
- Give an AI assistant the file, the key and the Dimesum import prompt. It shows a dry run of the first rows before it writes anything.
- Approve the dry run. The assistant adds every bill with its own date, payer and split, and people with no account become kept places.
- Share the group's invite link. Each friend claims their seat, and their balance comes with it.
The full walk-through, with the prompt and what to check afterwards, is in how to move your group off Splitwise.
What each one costs
Dimesum's ledger is free, with no daily cap. Splitwise's free tier comes with its documented cap of 4 expenses a day, and Pro removes it. All Splitwise prices below were read on 22 August 2026.
| What | Dimesum | Splitwise |
|---|---|---|
| The ledger | Free, no daily cap | Free tier; 4 expenses a day |
| Paid tier | None for the ledger | Pro: $2.99, $3.99, $4.99, $29.99 or $39.99 (US App Store) |
| Price range on Google Play | No store listing yet | $0.99 to $89.99; regional pricing varies about 20 times |
| Moving money | Never holds money; you pay through your own app | Splitwise Pay: standard transfer $0.00, instant 1.75% ($0.25 to $25) |
For a wider view, Splitwise alternatives ranks ten apps on the cap and four other tests, and bill splitting apps compared covers the general list.
Run your next trip's first night through both
Enter the first evening's bills in each app, in two currencies, then fix one of them. The app that still shows you the right balance, without a daily wall, is the one to keep. Open Dimesum and start with tonight's bill.
Common questions
Is Dimesum better than Splitwise?
Dimesum is the better fit if your group needs a free ledger with no daily expense limit, balances kept per currency and edits that keep their history. Splitwise is the one to keep if everyone already pays for Pro or you need a store phone app today, since Dimesum's phone apps are in closed testing.
Is Dimesum free?
Yes. Dimesum's ledger, meaning groups, bills, balances and settling up, is free with no daily expense limit. The only caps are 50 people a group and 200 groups an account. Dimesum never holds money; when you pay someone, it opens the payment app or bank details they chose.
Can I import my Splitwise groups into Dimesum?
Yes, from your own export. A member exports the group from Splitwise as a spreadsheet, and an AI assistant with a Dimesum key adds every bill with its date, payer and split through the Dimesum API. Splitwise's API terms forbid competing apps, so Dimesum never pulls the data itself.
Does Dimesum have a daily limit like Splitwise?
No. Dimesum has no per-day bill cap on its free ledger. Splitwise does: its help centre says a free account can add up to 4 expenses each day, as of 7 October 2026, and Splitwise Pro or the Splitwise Card removes it.
Is there a Dimesum app for Android and iPhone?
Not in the stores yet. The Android and iOS apps are in closed testing as of October 2026, and the web app is live at app.dimesum.com in any phone or desktop browser. Splitwise runs on the web, iOS and Android today.
