Splitwise daily limit: 4 expenses a day and your options

· 9 min read ·

Splitwise's help centre says a free account can add up to 4 expenses a day, as of 7 October 2026. What Pro adds, what the Splitwise Card changes, and the four ways out when the cap hits mid trip.

A free Splitwise account can add up to 4 expenses a day. Splitwise says so itself: its help centre article What is Splitwise Pro and who can use it? lists unlimited expenses as a Pro feature and gives the free allowance, as of 7 October 2026. Dimesum, the app we make, has no daily cap on its free ledger, so we have a stake in this question, and every fact about Splitwise below is dated and sourced so you can check it.

The short version: Splitwise Pro removes the limit, the Splitwise Card adds unlimited expenses without Pro, and the other ways out are a spreadsheet or another app. Each question below answers in its first paragraph.

Does Splitwise have a daily limit on free accounts?

Yes. Splitwise's help centre lists unlimited expenses under Pro and says a free account can add up to 4 expenses each day, as of 7 October 2026. The limit is documented policy, and complaints about meeting it run through App Store reviews from version 24.10.4 to version 26.7.

So the number comes from Splitwise, and the reviews tell you what meeting it is like. Both matter: the help page tells you where the line sits, and the reviews tell you which day of a trip it tends to land on.

How many expenses a day can you add on Splitwise for free?

Four. Splitwise's help centre says a free account can add up to 4 expenses each day, as of 7 October 2026, and lists unlimited expenses as a Pro feature. One New Zealand reviewer describes being stopped at three, but that is one account's experience; the documented figure is four.

What the fourth expense feels like is clearest in a one-star review from Great Britain on version 26.6.3, quoted on the Splitwise App Store listing:

"…after your 4th expense it says 'daily limit reached'. Have some shame."

Has Splitwise said anything official about the limit?

Yes. The help centre article What is Splitwise Pro and who can use it? states the figure: a free account can add up to 4 expenses each day, and Pro lifts the limit, as of 7 October 2026. The same help centre carries a second article, Why am I seeing an expense limit.

That matters for how you plan. A figure on a help page can still change, so check what your own account shows before a trip, and plan the busiest day around four bills if the group stays on the free tier.

When did the Splitwise daily limit start?

The help page gives the limit but not the date it began, so the earliest date we have comes from outside Splitwise. A Hacker News comment on 6 September 2024 said free accounts had at some point been throttled to four a day, and reviews mentioning the cap appear across app versions from 24.10.4 through 26.7.

For scale on the price: when Splitwise raised a $20M Series A in April 2021, TechCrunch reported Pro at $3 a month.

What happens when you reach the limit?

Reviewers describe a "daily limit reached" message after the fourth expense, with ads before it. A one-star Canadian review on version 26.7.2 also describes 10-second timers between expenses on the free tier. After the fourth, no more bills go in that day without Pro, which is the allowance the help centre states.

The cap tends to bite on the busiest day of a trip. The flight, the taxi, the first dinner and the groceries all land at once. The reviews show it: among 69 recent one and two-star App Store reviews across six storefronts, read on 22 August 2026, the expense limit came up 19 times and the paywall 38.

What does Splitwise Pro add besides unlimited expenses?

Splitwise Pro adds receipt scanning and itemisation, currency conversion, charts, expense search, default splits, a JSON backup, 10GB of receipt storage, import from a connected card, and no ads, as of August 2026. The paid tier is described on the Splitwise Pro page.

Two of those matter beyond the cap. Currency conversion sits behind Pro, so a mixed-currency trip on the free tier gets less help; multi-currency expense splitting apps compares how others handle it. And the JSON backup is Pro only, which shapes how easily a group can leave later.

How much does Splitwise Pro cost?

US in-app prices for Splitwise Pro were $2.99, $3.99, $4.99, $29.99 and $39.99 as of August 2026, with legacy tiers sold alongside current ones. Google Play listed a range of $0.99 to $89.99. Regional pricing varies about 20 times between markets, so check the price shown in your own store.

TechCrunch reported $3 a month in April 2021. The US price points above do not say which is billed monthly and which yearly, and Splitwise's help centre names a monthly plan and two yearly plans without prices, so we do not set any one of them against that 2021 figure.

Does every member of a group need Pro?

Each member who adds more than 4 expenses a day needs Pro of their own, because Pro is sold per person. Splitwise's help centre says, as of 7 October 2026, that the Individual and monthly plans cover one person and the Duo plan two. The yearly plans include one Trip Pass, which gives a trip group Pro features for 30 days.

A two-star review from Great Britain on version 26.5.4 describes what that meant for one group:

"Now EVERY member of a group needs a subscription. So this means say you go away with 8 mates, they all need a Splitwise Pro membership… Realistically it'll take the best part of a week to put all your expenses in."

Without a Trip Pass, the cost scales with the group: each of those eight friends who adds bills needs a plan, or one person enters everything and stays under the cap.

Does the Splitwise Card remove the daily limit?

Yes, for expenses added with the card. The Splitwise Card page says the card adds unlimited expenses with no Pro subscription required. It is a Mastercard debit card issued by Coastal Community Bank that splits each purchase at the point of sale, with no monthly or foreign exchange fees, as of August 2026.

The catch is geography. Splitwise Pay, the wallet from the same bank, is US-only, and an instant withdrawal from it costs 1.75%, with a minimum of $0.25 and a maximum of $25. A group in London, Berlin or Tokyo cannot open that wallet.

What can you do when the limit hits in the middle of a trip?

You have four options: pay for Pro, use the Splitwise Card, move the group's bills to a spreadsheet, or move the group to another app. Waiting until tomorrow is a fifth, and it works for a flat that adds two bills a week, but not for a trip.

A spreadsheet is where many groups go, and it is fine for one flat in one currency. We draw the line where it breaks in spreadsheet or app for shared expenses, and our shared expense tracker template gives you a sheet that works if you go that way.

Is there a Splitwise alternative with no daily limit?

Yes. Dimesum's ledger is free with no daily expense limit; the only caps are 50 people a group and 200 groups an account. Every balance is kept per currency, an edit keeps the history, and a group settles in at most one transfer fewer than its people. The web app is live; phone apps are in closed testing.

We ranked ten apps on the cap and four other tests in Splitwise alternatives, and set Dimesum against Splitwise feature by feature in Dimesum vs Splitwise. If your bank already has a split feature, bank split features compared says when that is enough.

Can you take your Splitwise history with you?

Yes, if a member exports it. The Splitwise API terms forbid using its API for an app that competes with Splitwise, and the JSON backup is a Pro feature, so the free path is a member exporting the group as a spreadsheet. Dimesum's import then reads that file through an AI assistant.

The assistant matches each person in the file to a member, shows a dry run, and adds every bill with its own date, payer and split. People without an account become kept places that hold their balance until they claim it. The full walk-through is in how to move your group off Splitwise.

Why do daily limits hurt trips more than flats?

A flat adds bills at a steady pace and a trip adds them in bursts. Rent, power and the weekly shop rarely mean five bills in one day. A weekend away can mean twelve on the first evening and almost none after, and that is exactly the day a per-day cap bites.

The bursts also make the record harder to repair. Bills you hold back overnight get misremembered, and a misremembered bill is how shared balances stop adding up. Our guide to keeping track of who owes who on a trip covers the trip case end to end, and the best apps to split travel expenses ranks the apps for it.

Decide before the trip, not at the airport

If your group will add more than four bills on any one day, settle the question now: Pro for everyone, the Splitwise Card, or a ledger with no cap. Dimesum is free with no daily limit; open Dimesum and add the first night's bills before you leave.

Common questions

What is the Splitwise daily limit?

It is a cap of 4 expenses a day on a free Splitwise account. Splitwise's help centre article What is Splitwise Pro and who can use it? states it and lists unlimited expenses as a Pro feature, as of 7 October 2026. Reviews describe meeting it since at least 2024.

Does Splitwise Pro remove the daily limit?

Yes. Unlimited expenses is a Splitwise Pro feature, alongside receipt scanning, currency conversion, charts, search, a JSON backup and no ads. US in-app prices ran from $2.99 to $39.99 as of August 2026, and regional prices vary about 20 times between markets.

Can I avoid the Splitwise limit without paying for Pro?

Yes, in two ways. Expenses added with the Splitwise Card are unlimited without Pro, according to Splitwise's card page, though Splitwise Pay, from the same bank, is US-only. Anywhere, you can move the group to an app with no daily cap, such as Dimesum, whose free ledger has no per-day bill limit.

Is the Splitwise daily limit the same in every country?

Splitwise documents one figure, 4 expenses a day for a free account, and its help centre names no country exceptions, as of 7 October 2026. One New Zealand reviewer describes being stopped at three, so check what your own account shows before a trip.

Will I lose my Splitwise history if I switch apps?

No, as long as a member exports it first. The free route is the group's spreadsheet export, because the JSON backup needs Pro and Splitwise's API terms forbid competing apps from pulling the data. Dimesum reads that export through an AI assistant and keeps every bill's date, payer and split.
